The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) was founded in 1824. At first, it is a small private medical school. At that time Medical schools were rare in united states. Seven Charleston physicians formed the initial faculty with 30 students enrolled in 1824. The first graduation was on April 4, 1825. To achieve the financial backing for growth in the twentieth century, the college was transferred to state ownership and incorporated into the state's higher education system in 1913. After struggling many situations and conditions It has become a one of the nation’s top academic health science centers, with a 700-bed medical center and six colleges that train approximately 2600 health care professionals per year.
The College of Medicine offers a four-year medical curriculum leading to a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.). It also offers dual-degree programs in conjunction with other colleges and universities. The Colleges of Medicine and Graduate Studies offer a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree. Students can also receive a combined M.D./M.H.A through the Colleges of Medicine and Health Professions. The College partners with the University of South Carolina and The Citadel to provide an M.D./Masters in Public Health and M.D./Masters of Business administration, respectively.
